My Next Show(s): COCK & BULL

Here's the official plug for my next work project:

Cock and Bull are two different plays by the same playwright. Theatre by the River is presenting them in repertory, which means the plays are being presented on alternating nights by the same cast and crew. We are, however presenting both plays in one night for four days throughout the performance run.

I'm excited to be working with Theatre by the River. I am a founding member of the company (I'm no longer a company member) and I performed in many of their early productions. I haven't worked with them since I left the company in 2009, so this is a bit of a homecoming for me.

Here's what Theatre by the River has to say about the plays:
Cock & Bull
Two plays by Mike Bartlett
Performed on alternating nights, in repertory
Directed by Rodrigo Beilfuss
Featuring Kevin Anderson, Derek Leenhouts, Mel Marginet and Karl Thordarson
Design by Daina Leitold | Stage Managed by Lisa Nelson

Winner of the Olivier Award
John has been in a long-term relationship with his same-sex partner, M.  When they break up, John finds himself falling in love with W, a woman he sees on his daily commute. When he goes back to his relationship with M, he has a hard time leaving his connection to W.  What does this mean? Is he gay, straight, bisexual? Who will he choose to spend his life with?  When M suggests they settle the unrest over dinner – and invites his father along for support – it’s an evening that will forever change the way you look at a love triangle.

A National (Canadian) Premiere
Three employees wait to meet their boss. After the meeting, only two will have their jobs.  In 2014 the cost of living has increased exponentially, while income has remained stagnant. The chronic under-employment faced by Millennials means this play is full of high stakes, low morals and a need to win at all costs.

Cock and Bull are two stand-alone plays, which we are performing in repertory (same cast and crew, alternating nights).  Come to one for $20 ($15 for students, industry, underemployed) and see the second for just $12 (Repertory Special!)

Seating is limited in our venue, so if you live in Winnipeg or in the surrounding area and would like to purchase tickets click here.

The Dog Days of Summer

via my instagram

We snuck off to the lake for the last four days. It's been quite stormy this summer and we were blessed with pretty good weather all weekend. The best day was on Tuesday afternoon. It was quiet - being mid week and all - and the weather was just perfect. We spent the afternoon laying on the dock with the dogs, swimming and drinking cold beers.

These are the days I wait for all year. The dog days of summer....

Wishlist: Miss L Fire Bluebird Sandal

The no shopping stint is officially over. I went thrift and vintage shopping with my pal Daphne from Vixage last Tuesday and I'm seriously debating buying these Miss L Fire Bluebird sandals before they disappear.

I mean really. What rockabilly girl could resist these?!?!!

...sigh...I'm so!! I'll probably order them before the week is up...

UPDATE: I totally just bought them from ModCloth....It was gonna happen...I knew it...

Outfits: 60's Blue & Green Border Print Dress

I bought this dress from Patti at WildWoodRose Vintage in the Exchange Uporium - a pop up shop in downtown Winnipeg featuring Winnipeg Etsy sellers.

I was on my self imposed "no shopping fast" when I fell in love with this dress on the rack and instantly knew I was destined to cheat on my rule before I even tried it on. It has all my favourite colours (I mean, really...check out my house for proof). It's my favourite style: 50's/late 60's cotton sundress with a full skirt and it fits like a glove. Sorry rule...I had to have it.

No regrets. Look how freakin' cute it is!!!!!!

The funny thing is that I already own a blue and green cotton sundress. I try not to buy too many similar dresses, but this one is juuuust different enough that I let that rule go too. Plus I knew I had many killer accessories (interchangeable between dresses) to go with this beauty.

My hair is getting CRAZY long isn't it?! I need a trim - August, but I also wonder if it's time to get it cut shoulder-lengthish...probably not gonna happen yet. I'm not ready..

60's Blue & Green Border Print Cotton Sundress: WildWoodRose Vintage via Exchange Uporium
Green Butterfly Brooch: Ricki's Sample Sale
Bracelets: Thrifted
50's Bamboo Cage Purse: Thrifted, Value Village

Inspiration: Imelda May

I've recently been turned onto the music of Imelda May.

Despite my appearance, I don't regularly listen to a lot of rockabilly music. I saw some clips of her performing at Viva Las Vegas 17. I was intrigued, so I watched some of her vids on YouTube, then immediately downloaded a few of her albums from iTunes. Imelda May's voice is out of this world. Her albums are currently on permanent repeat on my iPod. I'm hooked and looking for more cool neo-rockabilly bands to discover (any recommendations?!).

Imelda May is classic rockabilly pin-up. I love her dedication to a style and a silhouette. It goes to show that a simple formula - a wiggle dress or pencil skirt and top with an iconic hairdo - can be the key to a great signature style.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to all of you for your kinds words and well wishes on my birthday last week. It meant so much to me!! xoxo..

Breaking with Tradition

I usually strive to wear as much vintage head to toe as I can on my birthday.

I had another vintage dress all picked out to wear to dinner yesterday, but once I repaired it (the fabric was shredding at the shoulder seams from being hung improperly) I decided it wasn't what I wanted to wear.

Deep down I knew I wanted to wear my new Jenny skirt in Burlesque print from Pinup Girl Clothing. So I broke with tradition and wore it.

Matching Vintage Pink Rhinestone Earrings and Necklace: Were my Grandma Nelsons
Beaded Black Bustier: Forever 21
Pink Flower Brooch (worn at waist): Smart Set
Jenny skirt in Burlesque Print: Pinup Girl Clothing
(unseen) Black Vintage Crinoline: gift from Krista
Black Peep Toe Pumps: thrifted, Value Village
Vintage Pink Shoe Clips: Ragpickers
(hard to see, but it's there) 30's/40's Black Cord Purse: thrifted, Value Village

We had dinner at Cibo Waterfront Cafe. The interior design and location on the Red River was beautiful. Our food was delicious, but we were a bit disappointed with the service - it wasn't terrible, but we expected more for the menu price point. We had fun regardless.

My girls: Jenny on the left, Leyan on the right.

After dinner we went to a Winnipeg landmark: Nucci's Gelati.

I had an amazing day! I have the best friends - they are the ones that make it special. :)

Another year, another birthday.

Today's the day. :) I've had many wonderful texts, emails and phone calls from friends and family already. I've eaten birthday cake for breakfast. So far, so good. :)

This afternoon I plan on collecting my free birthday drink from Starbucks and then hitting up Value Village for some thrift shopping. Tonight The Boy and are going out for dinner with friends.

I love birthdays. Today I feel blessed for the many wonderful things and people in my life. This feeling keeps me going through the tough times life throws my way too (who are we kidding, no ones life is perfect except in the blogosphere, right?!). I am also thankful for you, who come and visit this little blog of mine - thanks for hangin out - you guys rock!

I'll post birthday outfits and tales of dinner tomorrow. See you then!

Outfits: Pre-Birthday Dress

Tomorrow is my birthday. We're just about to round up the dogs and head to my Mom's for dinner.

It's a ridiculous 40 degrees Celsius with the humidity today. That might bother some people, but I love it. The hotter the better! And I knew just the dress to wear.
This dress was a serious impulse purchase.  I was browsing through Etsy on my phone during a show I was stage managing last winter. It popped up at $30 and I knew it would be perfect for summer. And at that price I couldn't go wrong. After shipping I paid less than $40 for this gorgeous dress and I couldn't be happier. It's in incredible condition and it's perfect for hot summer days like today.

Late 40's/Early 50's (I can't decide which it is!) Purple Vintage Cotton Dress: Etsy (can't remember the seller)
Purple Flower Earrings: Ricki's
Purple and White Flower Brooches: Ricki's
White Vintage Belt: Ragpickers
White Peep Toe Wedges: Le Chateau
50's Bamboo Cage Purse: Thrifted, Value Village

Meet Chopper

As of this last Sunday we have a new addition to our family.

Meet Chopper. He's a 9 month old American Bulldog Boxer cross who we rescued this past weekend.
He was staying at our neighbours who rent a house across the street from us. His owner couldn't keep him because he was staying a place that didn't allow dogs. Chopper lived in the garage and never went in the house. The Boy fell in love with him. We knew he was a sweet dog who wanted to be loved. We kept asking our neighbours if we could buy him, but we never got a straight answer from them.

Last week our neighbours knocked on our door and asked us if we wanted to take Chopper. They told us that there had been too many complaints about him barking all night and day. The landlord told them no more dogs after July 1st. If we didn't take him Chopper was going to go to the pound.

He's a sweet, sweet boy who desperately needs some love and discipline. He only knows his name, no commands, but he's eager to learn. He's almost mastered "sit" in less than 4 days. And we've got to teach him to walk on a leash.

He and Dave get along great! They love to play with each other and share their beds.

We're so happy to have Chopper. He's been transitioning really well to living at our place.  We feel like he was always meant to be here.
