I have a little secret...ok, well it's not really a secret, but I don't like people to know, or see.
I'm building this up way more than is necessary...
I have some brutally patchy eyebrows from over-plucking in the 90's. I pencil them in every day. Otherwise they look scraggly and bad...at least I think so.
Here's the pictorial evidence. And naturally, I've uploaded this photo and am thinking "Well they don't look that bad..." Cripes. I swear they look worse in person... really.
I finally decided to take some action last week and take care of them. I've only got foundation on in this photo, but my eyebrows (and eyelashes!) are looking halfway decent because I had them tinted at the salon last week.
Normally my eyelashes are non-existant without mascara and my eyebrows are much much lighter. The tinting darkened some of the lighter eyebrow hairs and have made them look fuller - which has helped in the patchy department. Now if I was a good blogger I'd have remembered to take before photos of my brows before the tinting...ah well...
Now here is the next big step in conquering my embarrassing brows (I can hardly believe I've posted this picture...I NEVER leave the house without filling in my brows and don't like people to see them) is this:
RapidBrow. It was recommended to me by the esthetician who tinted my brows. I literally left the salon and drove to a drugstore to pick some up. I set me back $40, but I'm hoping it'll be worth it. It claims to improve the look of eyebrows by 108% in 90 days. It's a mascara-like wand and a clear gel like substance that you sweep over your eyebrows twice a day - morning and night. You can use it over tinted brows (mine have been fine) and after it dries I'm free to pencil in where it's still patchy. Love that.
I've been using it now for almost at week (the pic above was taken on the first day). Have I noticed a difference? Yes. A little - there are small hairs growing where previously none were and have been since I was 14. I'm eager to see the middle of my brows fill in a little more. I've got a long way to go, but I'll post an update once I get one month in.
Anyone else try this product? Or something similar?

Outfits: More Pink
I go through phases...last year I couldn't stop wearing blue (I do own a multitude of blue dresses...in my defence..). Pink seems to be this summer's colour of choice. Maybe it's my new hot pink clutch...
I donned this favourite on Monday to run some errands. I really love this dress. I bought it at Vintage Glory with a number of other dresses that belonged to a woman whose husband was a tailor. The fabric on this dress is pretty much the coolest thing ever...no really. I am in love with the endless swirl pattern - which is a bit raised - over the faint pink and turquoise stripes. And the pockets...can we all just stop and admire the adorable pockets on this dress for a moment please?
I can't believe that this dress hasn't been on the blog more than once seeing as though it has heavy rotation in my wardrobe. I even wear it in the winter with tights and a sweater.

I'm afraid our yard needs a little a lot of TLC. We've lived in our house for 4 years and barely touched the backyard. We knew it needed a major overhaul so we've left in alone until we were ready to dig in.
And this summer is the one! We're cutting down the many overgrown and partially dead trees and bushes in our back and front yard, grading up the ground around the house, building flower beds in front of the house, replacing the front sidewalk, demoing our old, broken deck and building a temporary patio (major deck building to come in a few years!) and building a fence!! Phew! That's about enough for this summer, but will only be a start on all the work this neglected (by the previous owners and us now. lol!) yard.

Yesterday...
I had a great birthday yesterday! Thank you all so much for your birthday wishes here and on Instagram!
We went to Hermanos for dinner with two other couples. None of us had been before, but I heard it was good. We were not disappointed! Our service was impeccable and our food was absolutely delicious!! There was a band playing live music and when our server found out it was my birthday she brought free champagne to our table! We had such a good time!
After dinner we went to a club around the corner for some more drinks and dancing! It was a great evening!

31
It's my birthday today! I turn 31.
Last year I spent an entire week celebrating turning 30. This year feels much more low key. I am neither elated nor am I bummed out by turning a year older. I don't want to say "It's just another day", because that's not how I feel at all...birthdays are special. This one just feels comfortable. I feel good in my skin. And that's a good feeling.
Here's to many more just like this one!

Outfits: Pretty in Pink
No such thing as too much of a good thing right? Yesterday, pink was good and I dressed in it from head to toe.
I also ventured away from my house for the first time in BDV history to take outfit photos. Thankfully working in theatre has got me used to people staring at me. I've heard other bloggers say how uncomfortable they are taking photos out in public...now where I took mine was a pretty quiet place, but there were still stares from the vehicles driving by. I decided not to care and actually had fun having my little photoshoot.
My 31st birthday is tomorrow and I've got some low key plans with a few other couples - mainly dinner out and some drinks. I'm sure The Boy and I will head out to do something in the afternoon as well.
Other than that I'm gearing up to paint my dressing room and keep cleaning our basement (it currently looks like it belongs on an episode of Hoarders...yikes!) and generally enjoying not working for the summer. Life is good. :)

Winnipeg Vintage Reviewed: Rhymes with Orange

This review is long overdue. Rhymes with Orange has become one of Winnipeg's most successful new vintage shops.
It is co-owned by Vintage Glory's owner Doug Shand and two lovey ladies Stephanie Hiebert and Erin Theissen.
I think my hesitation in writing this review has stemmed from Steph and Erin's amazing online presence and promotion of their shop on their blog Oh So Lovely!. What more could I say? How could I contribute? Rhymes with Orange has become such a huge part of the Winnipeg Vintage landscape that I am suddenly finding it impossible not to give my two cents.
Rhymes with Orange is more like a beautiful boutique filled with vintage than your classic vintage shop. Steph and Erin have done everything they can to make it pleasing to the eye as well as easy to shop.
The first thing you see when you walk in is the front counter filled with goodies: brooches, vintage glasses, bow ties and many other vintage accessories. And usually Erin or Steph's smiling face behind with a warm greeting (they remember their regulars!).
Before you can shop the women's section you've gotta walk through the menswear. The men's section is stocked by Doug and it easily the best place (perhaps the only decent place!?) to find men's vintage in Winnipeg. Leather jacket? yup. Band jackets? sure. Knitted sweater with a duck on the back? got those. Smoking jacket? got those too.
The men's section also carries a variety of tee-shirts, bowling shirts and western style button ups. The selection and quality that Vintage Glory once had has been carried over to this store. This is my go-to place to buy vintage menswear.
Most of the store is consumed with ladies wear. Hats and shoes are beautifully displayed along one wall and beyond are blouses, skirts and dresses. The back of the store has a small section of vintage mid century modern housewares.
The thing I miss at Rhymes with Orange is Doug's selection of ladies vintage. Erin and Steph do an amazing job stocking the store with a variety of vintage you can't find anywhere else in the city (they make several treks to Asia every year to shop for the store! so exciting!), I find at times that some of the vintage variety is lacking for my personal taste. Doug's taste in vintage ran a bit older like mine: 30's-50's and I bought much, much more form him at his previous shop. I often leave Rhymes with Orange empty handed because most of the stock hails from the late 60's-70's. When I do find a dress in my era though, I tend to snap it up (I recently bought a gorgeous 40's dress from them that I am dying to wear!!).
I have not let this effect the star rating in this review however, RwO is a great shop with great selection for people looking to get into vintage. Their stock is pretty and right on trend - the girls really know what is in style, what sells and they get in on the racks! I must commend them for that!
I adore their accessories! If you want enamel floral brooches in bright fun colours for less than $30, this is your place! Rhymes with Orange is also the best place in Winnipeg to buy reproduction vintage sunglasses. At 2 pairs for $30 you just can't go wrong. This is where I buy my signature cat eye sunglasses.
And speaking of prices, this shop is definitely easy on the wallet. Prices are reflective of the Winnipeg vintage market - items are priced about 1/2 as much as something would sell online. For example, most day dresses are under $40.
Overall, Rhymes with Orange is a great shop! It is easy to shop and has accessible, easy to wear vintage. It is definitely the first place I bring "non-vintage" shoppers when they want to shop with me. It breaks all the stigma's associated with vintage and thrift stores.

Outfits: Lingerie as Clothing
I have been wearing vintage lingerie as outerwear for years now. My mother will attest to the fact that in high school I wore a vintage turquoise slip as a dress with combat boots (still have the slip!! the boots, however are long gone.. haha!).
These days I've abandoned the combat boots for some more ladylike footwear, but am still partial to the prettiness that vintage lingerie adds to an outfit.
It was swelteringly hot out yesterday, so a cool outfit was in order. I paired my new black (yes, I know...black on a hot day...it's silk...so that makes it cool...right?!) skirt and this beautiful vintage lace camisole. A few accessories (I actually wore two silver bangles during the day that I neglected to put back on when I took these photos after dinner) and a pop of colour in my new favourite purse.
I wore this to the salon yesterday. I was putting #12 of my list "12 Things Happy People do Differently" into practice yesterday and got a brow tint, eyelash tint and a bikini wax. I feel like a million bucks! :)

Happy People
Work has finished for another season and I am left feeling a bit scraped out. It has been a difficult year.
Every show I've worked on has held enormous challenges for me to deal with and sort out. It's no secret that I love my job, but that doesn't change the fact that it can be stressful at times. And this year has been more stressful than usual.
The end of last week couldn't have come soon enough...I am tired, stressed out and in serious need of some personal rejuvenation: both mentally and spiritually.
It takes a lot to get me down for this long - and I've felt like this for a month now - desperately trying to wait patiently for July so I can take a little holiday and get some much needed me time before work starts again in September.
I like to consider myself an optimist - a glass half full kinda gal. This, however, doesn't keep me from feeling like I've been hit by a Mac Truck now and then though...but thankfully, I have a bag of tools to help get me back up again.
I've never really sat down and articulated what it is that helps keep my mood so sunny and my spirits high, but good 'ole Pintrest helped me out two weeks ago when I was feeling my lowest: a list (my favourite thing!). 12 Things Happy People Do Differently.
I already do all of these things unconsciously, but a written reminder was confirmation of what I needed to do to bring myself a little out of the dumps.
So I decided I would share this list with you my fine friends.

12 Things Happy People Do Differently
1. Express Gratitude.
When you appreciate what you have, what you have appreciates in value.
If we aren't thankful for what we already have, we will have a hard time ever being happy.
On days when I'm feeling low I make a gratitude list (another one!): a list of all of the things I
have to be grateful for in life. It is a physical reminder of the good things in my life. I read it
outloud to myself if I can. And I keep this list with me until I'm feeling better. In my darkest days
I kept a book with all my gratitude lists and toted it around with me.
2. Cultivate Optimism.
People who think optimistically see the world as a place packed with endless opportunities,
especially in trying times.
This is not what I would put second on this list, personally. I think cultivating optimism can be
difficult for someone who is trying to turn around their view on the world. It's certainly
something to keep in your back pocket, but I also think it comes more naturally when some of the
other items on this list are done.
Cultivating optimism for me is summed up in this sentence:
If that's the worst thing that happens today, we're having a good day.
3. Avoid Over-thinking and Social Comparison.
Comparing yourself to someone else can be poisonous.
The only person you should compare to is "yourself before now".
In our bigger is better, "I want, I want, I want" society this one can be difficult. It can be hard to
see our friends and family getting and doing things we yearn for. In times like this (because I am
no stranger to the "green-eyed monster" or "keeping up with the Jones'") I remind myself that
my life is not on the same trajectory as anyone else's. I trust that the
universe/God/the fates/whateveryouwannacallit is pushing me in the direction that I'm supposed
to be going in. I get out my gratitude list (see #1) and remind myself that I probably have many
things that others wish they have. The grass is always greener.
And if I actually want something tangible that someone else has, I make a plan of action. What
can I do in order to get closer to that new life goal?
4. Practice Acts of Kindness.
Selflessly helping someone is a super powerful way to feel good inside.
I practice this every day that I can - it doesn't have to be big acts either. I smile at the person in
the car next to me at a red light. I tell the woman in the liquor mart that her shoes are beautiful.
I help the elderly man in the grocery store read a price label. I bring my assistant a
small treat at work - a coffee, or a snack. Donate old clothes to a homeless or a women's shelter.
Volunteer at the shelter! Bring your neighbour some homemade goodies. You get the idea...
5. Nurture Social Relationships.
The happiest people on the planet are the ones who have deep, meaningful relationships.
Call your mother/brother/grandmother. Make plans with friends, even if you are tired. Spending
time with people you like rejuvenates you. This is the one I have the hardest time with - I like to
be a shut in and nurture the relationship I have with my couch!
6. Develop Strategies for Coping.
It helps to have healthy strategies for coping pre-rehearsed, on-call and in your arsenal at your
disposal.
I have the hardest time dealing with stress (like many people). I am currently working on my
arsenal for coping with anxiety and stress. Deep breathing (it really works!), which in turn gives
me a chance to step back from the situation and assess. Sometimes I just need to extract myself
completely to get a handle on my anxiety/stress - I have yet to find a time and a place where I
wasn't able to take 3 minutes to get myself back together enough to function.
I also have other tools for dealing with other kinds of things life likes to throw my way. The trick
to building an arsenal is to learn from your mistakes - how did the last crisis (however big or
small) affect me? What would I do differently if I had to live it all over again?
7. Learn to Forgive.
Harbouring feelings of hatred is horrible for your well being.
This can be difficult. I just had to do this last month - forgive someone so I could move on. It
takes a big person to forgive sometimes. I take pleasure in the thought that I am strong enough
to forgive someone even if they don't forgive me, or know that I've forgiven them, or even need
to. The act of forgiveness can be about me - it's about moving past negative feelings and letting
myself move forward. It's about understanding another's faults, knowing that I have my
faults as well. It's about knowing that hatred can't change another person, but love
and kindness can.
8. Increase Flow Experiences.
Flow is a state in which it feels like time stands still.
It's when you're so focused on what you're doing that you become one with the task.
Nothing is distracting you or competing with your focus.
I like to call this "living in the moment". With all of our social media and technology these days
this one can be difficult too (and I am increasingly guilty of taking photos with my iPhone instead
of taking in the scenery). Living in the moment creates strong positive emotional memories that
can be revisited in times of trouble. Living in the moment makes you feel alive! Forget about
everything plaguing you...experience the world with your five senses (not your phone!): how
does this moment taste/smell/look/feel like/sound like? You only get this moment once in your
entire life and I promise you, your camera will never remember it the same way your mind will.
9. Savour Life's Joys.
Deep happiness cannot exist without slowing down to enjoy the joy.
A perfect next step from #8. Live in the moment, then savour the joy. These are the moments that
make living worth it. 'Nuff said.
10. Commit to Your Goals.
Magical things start happening when we commit ourselves to doing whatever it takes to get
somewhere.
These days I don't carry a book of gratitude lists. I carry around a piece of paper with my goals
on it; things I want to achieve in life and have to work towards.
Some of them are small: find a better way to organize the paper in the house.
Some of them are big: Stage Manage a large touring show.
I also have a mental plan of action (feel free to write your plans of action down) for each one.
Accomplishing tasks on my action list or even achieving a goal is a wonderful thing! I celebrate
my success! I tell family and friends and use this feeling as fuel to accomplish the next task.
11. Practice Spirituality.
When we practice spirituality or religion, we recognize that life is bigger than us.
We surrender the idea that we are the mightiest thing ever.
I have never spoken about spirituality/religion on my blog before. Why would I? It's a life-light
lifestyle blog. I am not a religious person. I refer to myself as a spiritual person. I believe in a
higher power, I believe that there is something bigger than me in the universe and I trust that it
will guide me where I am supposed to be in life. I have no explanation why I believe this, but that
is the nature of faith isn't it?
Having this faith can instil a calmness in me that nothing else can in times of trouble. I can't give
you advice on how to become religious or spiritual, but just tell you of my experience.
12. Take Care of Your Body.
Taking care of your body is crucial to being the happiest person you can be.
Taking care of your body doesn't just refer to being physically healthy, in my opinion. Naturally,
getting enough sleep and eating well are important. Making sure you are internally healthy is the
place to start, but don't forget the outward beauty maintenance. No matter how shallow it
sounds, I always feel better when my toenails are painted, my roots are dyed and my legs are
shaved. Don't overlook the power of the small things in life to help change your perspective
on the larger things.
So there it is. This list isn't mine, but I swear by it - as a happy person.
Are you working on becoming a happier person? What are you doing? What do you think of this list? Anything you would add/omit?

HAPPY CANADA DAY!
If you're a Canuck, I hope you're off doing something fun today - like sharing an ice cold, frosty beer with a peace loving beaver while you enjoy the wonders of nature.
I'll be at the beach with my friends...which is kinda like that...
HAPPY CANADA DAY!!
