Outfits: Heat Wave

It was so hot out last Saturday! +26 degrees Celsius! I've been wearing fall coats, hats and scarves for weeks now and suddenly I was wearing  a dress and open toed shoes!

Sadly it's cooled back down a bit, but it was lovely while it lasted. Edit: I scheduled this post a few days ago assuming it would cool down, but it is in fact snowing here in Winnipeg today and I am totally amused at the irony of posting this summery outfit on the first snowfall of the season! Ah Winnipeg...

The Boy and I ran some errands on Saturday in the morning and had planned on going for a bike ride, but got distracted and it never happened. Ah well...good intentions...

This dress is a 40's housedress I bought at Ragpickers. Another one I bought years ago before I really started to hoard collect.
You've seen these shoes before. I bought them for and wore them to K & D's wedding in June.

Also! Did you notice my eyes are a little more naked than usual? I am not wearing eye liner! In fact, I've been forgoing eye liner during the day more and more these days. It felt a little weird at first. I find if I apply a little more blush my face doesn't look so pale. In actuality like it a lot! I feel like it makes me look fresh and pretty.
And as you can see, I have not cut my bangs. I'm leaving them until I actually figure out what I want to do with my hair and go the the hairdresser.

Fall Inspiration: Going Out to Casual

As much as I love fall I always become a little baffled when I actually have to start layering an outfit. I search for fall style inspiration more than any other season.

I have saved two images which I am aspiring to this fall season.

The first is my "Going Out" image. By going out I mean coffee, casual dinner with The Boy or friends etc...

For me, the outfit above quintessentially reflects my style. I love the quirky colour combo, but it's also a little matchy-matchy. I like the vintage touches: the bag, the full skirt (could be substituted for a dress!) and the subtle vintage inspired 'do. This look is also about the restrained layers. There are just enough for this outfit to be styled, but not overdone (I would have added a brooch on on the jacket though). It's very cute and I'm working towards this for fall.

The second image is my "Casual" inspiration. Weekend errand running maybe or those busy days at work where dressing up in a no-go.

You may be surprised by my choice of this outfit. It's awfully modern. The clincher is the sequin tank over this casual outfit. It had me at 'hello'. And it's this mix that I want for my casual outfits. I need a little something out-of-the-ordinary so I don't feel ordinary (know what I mean?). Even though none of these clothes are vintage, I know it could be easily replicated with a few vintage pieces. What about a 60's beaded/sequin shell over a vintage Levis chambray shirt and a 40's structured blazer? Add skinny jeans and some riding boots: bam! You've got yourself a look similar to this for less cash!

The bonus in any fabulous fall fashion for a Winnipegger? When the snow falls all you need to do is add a fabulous winter coat, hat and gloves to transition these looks until the weather warms up again!

Like these looks? I'm now addicted to Pintrest like the rest of the internet.

Outfits: A Little Half Assed, I Hope You Don't Mind

I hope you excuse my calling this an "Outfit Post". I didn't have enough energy to take my usual full length photos. It's been a pretty crazy week around here. Dave ate something that didn't agree with him on Tuesday and he's been sick all week. We've been to the vet twice in the last 5 days and the night before I took these photos I only got 4 1/2 hours of broken sleep. Poor pup had to go outside every 2 hours.
Hence the sunglasses. I'm hiding some bags behind them! lol!

Dave is on the mend though, we've finally got him on some food he's actually interested in eating and we're seeing a bit of his usual Boxer pep return.

We were headed to my Mom's for dinner with the family and I finally wore this amazing 40's wool jacket that I bought at Ruby Slipper this summer (I also own the skirt. You can see it in this post.)
I really like it worn as a light fall jacket like this and I'm looking forward to wearing it as a blazer this winter.

Isn't the colour to die for? I am smitten with the collar, the butttons...well I'm pretty much in love with everything about this suit.

Outfits: Suddenly It's Fall

I know I was the one posting Inspiration posts about fall earlier this week, but it was still hot and sunny then...it never fails...I yearn for fall and when it gets here I'm always a little bummed for a few days. Every year I have a small grief period and say good-bye to summer.

I had coffee with my friend Michael yesterday afternoon and had planned to wear a dress, but when I let Dave out before I left the air felt too cold for a dress without tights...and I'm not ready to wear tights yet...
So pants it was. So this is what I threw on before I left.

This blazer is vintage. It's part of a suit I bought at Value Village for $7. I love the lining! It's another piece I almost sold and is now living in my closet.

Vintage Blazer: thrifted, Value Village
 Vintage Flower Brooch: Ruby Slipper
Sequin Dot Tee: Joe Fresh
Jeans: Forever 21
Green Pumps: Forever 21

It's been a quiet week around here without The Boy. I am enjoying having the whole bed to myself at night, but other than that I miss him.

My New Bike!

I'm so excited to finally show you my new bike! I gave you a sneak peek while it was under construction a few weeks ago here.

Without further adieu: my new baby! My 1970 Schwinn Hollywood.

We bought my bike on eBay. It came from Winona, Minnesota, USA. We decided to keep the original license sticker. It's reflective!

Just for fun: the original ad for my bike in the 1970 Schwinn catalogue!

What can I say? I just love, love, love my new bike! I couldn't be happier! My only regret is that soon it will be snowing and I'll have to wait until next year to ride it.

Outfits: Opposites Attract

I had rehearsal today (yes, we work on Sundays. It's a 6 day work week while I'm on contract). We're in the final countdown until the move to the theatre on Thursday. And then I start working 12 hour days for a little while. Best not to think about it until then! :)

I really wanted to wear a dress today, but the wind is gusting to 70 kilometres an hour, so I figured pants were a safer bet (ah, life on the prairies!).

I've never worn this outfit before and it may become a work standby! I really love the mix of jeans and boots with the tweed blazer, blouse and vintage hat. It's like the mullet of outfits: Business on top, Party on the bottom ...that may be the stupidest thing I've ever written on this blog! lol!!

Anyway...before I type anything else stupid, here's my new favourite outfit:

Apologies for the weird lighting in the first few photos...the sun is starting to set here around 7:30, so around 5-5:30 I've got direct sunlight into my living room and I had to use the flash to compensate. More to learn about my camera I suppose...

40's Grey Felt Hat w/Feather Pom: Ruby Slipper
Faux Fur Scarf: Ricki's
Tweed Blazer: Laura
Print Blouse w/Bow: Laura
50's Sweater Pin: Vintage Glory
Grey Denim: Ricki's
Black Leather Boots: Thrifted, Value Village

Have a great week!

Wishlist: Riding Boots

Fall is here today (we've had summer-like weather all week) and I am lost in thoughts of fall/winter footwear.

Specifically riding boots. I don't currently own a pair. I'm uber picky and haven't found the right pair at the right price in the last few years. I wish I had thought to save some money over the summer (when all I could think about was open toed shoes and wedge sandals...) so I could buy a pair now. But alas, the funds are low...

These 2 pairs from Brown's are really doing it for me right now....Sigh...

This pair would be my first choice. I love the mottled leather. You could wear them with black or brown. And I love the option of pulling them up over your knee for added warmth and cover in the winter. Can't you imagine these with thick tights and a cute flowy feminine dress?

available to purchase here.

As you can see, my second choice is similar, but different. Solid black, with a buckle. This pair is more expensive as well and available in more colours.

want this pair? buy them here

So anyone reading this who would like to buy me an extra special Christmas gift knows what to get me...size 8 1/2 please.

Anything for fall you're dying to own, but just can't put into the budget right now?

Outfits: First Day of Rehearsal (and some extras!)

Today was our first day or rehearsal for Way to Heaven.

The first day of rehearsal is fun. It's the first time the entire team is in the room together; actors meet designers and vice versa. There is always plenty of goodies and coffee (today was no exception!) and often (if you're not new to the business) there are old friendly faces to catch up with.

After the meet and greet the designers present the costume and set designs to the cast and crew, following which the actors read through the play for the first time together! Then, typically there is discussion about the play. Easy peasy day!

As I've said before, working in theatre is not conducive to pretty dresses, so injecting some vintage flair into my outfits is always my goal.

Here's what I wore today:

And just for fun, this is what I wore on Saturday to run errands. I love, love, love this cape. It has a houndstooth lining. Yum!

Black and White Ruffle Front Blouse: Ricki's
White Tank: Walmart
Black Skinny Jeans: Forever 21
Black Flats: Joe Fresh
Sunglasses: Le Chateau
Vintage Lucite Bird Brooch: Mike's General Store
Red Wool Cape: Laura
Vintage Purse: Thrifted
Satin Bow Mary Janes: Winners

How do you like to add vintage flair to your more casual outfits? I'd love to know! Send me a link so I can check it out!

I'd also love to know if you're enjoying my posts describing my job? Or are they boring? Or, do you have any questions about my job? Please let me know either way.

You guys are great! Thanks! :)

Fall is Perfect for Layering

I just love this time of year. Lots of layers are required to stay warm and you don't have to hide them yet under a heavy coat. You can really go out and show off your outfits!

Today I headed out to meet the stage manager at the rehearsal hall to begin set up for our rehearsals (which start on Monday!).

This is what I wore:

This outfit embodies all of my favorites: a mix of modern and vintage with a feminine touches, yet a funky edge. Perfection!

Cream Blouse: Jacob
Pink Lace Tank (unseen): Randy River
Pearl and Chain Necklace: From Mom

Perfect Fall Day

It is just glorious outside today! The air is fresh and crisp, the sun is shining and there is a slight breeze. The perfect fall day.

I had a few errands to run this afternoon. I met the co-ordinator of the Costume Museum Fashion Show so I could pick up a few costumes that need mending and cleaning before our next fashion show and my fridge was in desperate need of groceries, so that was on my list too.

This is what I wore out and about:

A tee shirt and a skirt is my favorite go-to for fall and winter. It never fails to look good and be comfortable. When the weather cools down some more all this outfit needs is tights, a slip. Easy!

Vintage Rhinestone Earrings: Thrifted
Denim Jacket: Zanadi
Beaded Peacock Tee: Jacob
Black Satin Belt: Le Chateau
50's Green A-line Skirt: Ragpickers
Black Leather Mary Janes: Calvin Klein
Houndstooth Purse: Aldo

Inspiration: Fashionistable

I know this image has been floating around the bloggosphere, but I can't get it out of my head!

The weather here in Winnipeg has cooled down significantly in the last week and I've started thinking about fall.

image borrowed from Fashionistable

Isn't this just the most perfect fall outfit? It's got such an easy vintage vibe to it. I also love the mix of grey with camel, it's a little unexpected, but works oh so well.
Ok...now I'm on the hunt for the perfect long wide legged pant!

Discovery!

I've been searching high and low for a cute pair of boots with a low heel.

Little did I know they were right here at home, right under my nose!

I bought them second hand quite a few years ago to put in my tickle trunk (full of lovely costumey pieces).

I've actually wore them a few years ago when I played Susanna Moodie in Molly Thom's The Bush Ladies.

Watch me act and speak in a British accent here!

Anyway, aren't they cute? Perfect for skinny jeans or with socks, tights and a skirt! I'm a sucker for buttons.
PLUS they were already in my closet! No need to buy more and add to the pile which I am currently trying to whitle down.
