Outfits: New Years Eve

The Boy and I spent New Years Eve with a small group of friends. We had a few drinks (I'm thankfully not hung over as I write this. Just a faint throb in my head. Nothing coffee and breakfast won't cure), we ate some delicious food and ended the night with a game of Cards Against Humanity.

I knew it was going to be a more casual evening, but I still wanted to wear something festive. For a girl who is attracted to sparkly things like a magpie I really don't have too many dressy separates. Then I remembered that I bought this tank from Value Village during Halloween this year. It's a bit like beaded chain mail. The entire tank except for the straps is beaded with a lining behind it. I paid under $7 for it because it was on the costume rack. I'm very sure a similar tank at a retailer would be close to $100. It's a very well made piece of clothing and I'm happy to have found it.

I am very happy to welcome 2015. I'm eager for a few fresh starts in some areas of my life. 2014 wasn't all bad, but I'm glad it's over. There are some exciting things on the horizon both in my professional and personal life and I'm looking forward to them.

Outfits: New Old Dress. Had to Have It (as usual...)

Does anyone else find Christmas shopping difficult? I mean, of course it is. But I mean specifically fighting the urge to buy yourself presents? Especially the kind that no one else will buy you.

Like this dress.

I was in the Exchange doing some Christmas shopping with Daphne from Vixage. We stopped at the Exchange Uporium. Patti Henderson - curator and owner of WildWoodRose Vintage - has her stuff there. Deadly.
So I'm perusing her racks and I see this dress. I knew immediately without trying it on that I had to have it.   ...I'm so weak...
Decision made when I put it on and it fit like it was made for me. damn.

I also bought a gift for a gift exchange while there, so at least there's that lol!

Black is hard to photograph with my point and shoot camera, but I'm hoping you can see the asymmetrical peplum/draped panel on the back. Also has three covered buttons at the nape of the neck.

After I took the last bunch of photos I decided I needed more accessories, so I grabbed this hat and clutch. I'm in love.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who buys themselves things while Christmas shopping. I've got four more gifts to buy and then I can stay away from the stores. Now I just need to find somewhere to wear this dress.

Outfits: Uniform

Do you ever find yourself wearing a kind of "you" uniform? You know, that certain silhouette or combination of garments that makes you feel really comfortable in your own skin? The one that you instinctually gravitate towards? Perhaps almost daily?
Well this has been mine.

It's been such a frigid winter. I haven't worn a skirt since the fall and I'm still not quite ready. I've also been forgoing heels for these converse (I have an all black pair too) or my ankle boots since the sidewalks have become dry. My outfits have been some version of this for months now. Sometimes a bit more dressed up, but never more dressed down than this.

You gotta wear what feels right. Not what you think everyone else expects you to wear.

Outfits: Vintage 40's Tilt Hat

There's nothing like a good hat to spice up an otherwise utilitarian outfit. I bought this charming 40's tilt hat from Ragpickers a few years ago. I've pinned the flowers to it for a little boost of colour.

As you can see, my love of black and white this winter continues. It's just so classic! You can't go wrong!

Colour Need Not Apply

I am practicing what I preach this winter. I keep posting inspiration posts with all black outfits and I have barely worn any colour at all since before the snow melted! I'm hooked!
I've been mixing it up with some white and grey, but colour has definitely taken a backseat in this winters wardrobe.

Here are some of my favourites:

* top - Joe Fresh * belt - thrifted * dress - thrifted, from Buffalo * pumps - vintage *

* sweater - thrifted, Club Monaco * bird brooch - vintage * skinny jeans - Forever 21 * belt - Jacob * riding boots - thrifted *

* cardigan - thrifted, Joe Fresh * tee - thrifted * flower brooch - Ricki's * skirt - Debbie's Vintage * pumps - Forever 21 *

* sweater - thrifted, Issac Mizrahi for Target * necklace - Le Chateau * skinny jeans - Forever 21 * belt - Jacob * boots - Le Chateau *

Do you snuggle up in dark colours for the winter months? Or do you combat the cold with bright hues?

Wednesday

So this is what happens when I don't plan my outfit the night before. I end up wearing black from head to toe. It's not terrible, but this is the result.

Nothing sends an outfit into "vintage world" like these glasses. They're always the cherry on top ot the outfit sundae.

Outfits: All My Summer Favourites

If you follow me on Insta you've already had a sneak peek at this outfit yesterday. I had jam packed day!

I met some girlfriends from work (who are both stage managers, like me) for lunch at Rudy's Eat & Drink downtown. When The Boy picked me up he said he was craving Rum Punch from Muddy Water's Riverside Patio, so we had to go! We ran into a friend and spent the rest of the afternoon on the patio taking in the scenery, the sun and sipping on delicious cocktails!

I wasn't into wearing a dress today. I've been really inspired by flowy skirts and crop tops on Pintrest as of late. This is my interpretation. I also left the heels at home because I wanted to keep the look more causal. I'm stoked about this outfit! I want to wear it again before it cools off! It contains all of my new favourite summer pieces: new sandals, new skirt, new purse and new scatter pins!! The top is an oldie, but a goodie from Joe Fresh that I picked up at a thrift store.

After dinner yesterday evening The Boy and I went on a bike ride for an hour. I didn't wear this outfit for the bike ride however...lol! We have a great bike and walking path in our end of the city and we've been trying to get some more exercise into our schedules.

All in all, a summer day well spent!

Outfits: Lingerie as Clothing

I have been wearing vintage lingerie as outerwear for years now. My mother will attest to the fact that in high school I wore a vintage turquoise slip as a dress with combat boots (still have the slip!! the boots, however are long gone.. haha!).

These days I've abandoned the combat boots for some more ladylike footwear, but am still partial to the prettiness that vintage lingerie adds to an outfit.

It was swelteringly hot out yesterday, so a cool outfit was in order. I paired my new black (yes, I know...black on a hot day...it's silk...so that makes it cool...right?!) skirt and this beautiful vintage lace camisole. A few accessories (I actually wore two silver bangles during the day that I neglected to put back on when I took these photos after dinner) and a pop of colour in my new favourite purse.

I wore this to the salon yesterday. I was putting #12 of my list "12 Things Happy People do Differently" into practice yesterday and got a brow tint, eyelash tint and a bikini wax. I feel like a million bucks! :)

Outfits: Black is the New Black

Lamest post title ever...yup...I'm ok with it. But really, you just can't go wrong with all black. Ever. It always looks chic and classic.

I feel a bit like Dita Von Teese running to my car after pilates in this outfit! lol!

The photo below inspired this outfit. I discovered it online ages ago, saved it and vowed to re-create this look for myself. I bought my top with thoughts of this image in mind and when I found this pleated silk skirt at the Johnston Terminal Antique Mall at Debbie's shop (review in the works - stay tuned!) I couldn't leave it. I knew it was the piece I'd been waiting for to complete my look.

Outfits: Everyday

I'm on a roll! Third outfit post in a week! Whoop whoop! Lol!

I wore this yesterday to run errands with The Boy. Some version of this has been my casual go-to for weeks now.

I've been really influenced by rockabilly styles as of late - which I think is pretty evident in this look. For me, it's just the perfect mix of tough and feminine.

I bought this bag on a whim last week. I was out doing errands for the show I'm working on and found it at Winners. It's Italian leather and I love the colour!! My new laptop fits in it (I just bought a 13" MacBook Pro recently)!
I'm usually a big sucker for a vintage bag, but there is something about this beauty that screamed "Take me home with you!!!" I was powerless against it's....uh...powers.
